Just beyond the school grounds, hidden behind a modern sewage tank, lies a place few speak of: the cemetery from the original Haskell Indian Boarding School that once operated on that land. It is truly sacred ground that tells the story of tragedy, filled with silent witnesses to an era of forced assimilation and generational trauma via kidnapping and abuse. That's when we met her. A beautiful Dine' elder, standing alone in the doorway with a big smile on her face. We all kept a safe distance. Justin and were wearing masks, had been washing our hands and sanitizing all day, and were constantly putting on new gloves for each new delivery. We kept a safe distance for us and for her. But quickly that big smile turned into a quivering chin.

Among them are Syrian Christians, one of the oldest indigenous Christian people groups in the world, whose faith has endured in the Middle East for more than 2,000 years and whose cultural roots reach back even further. Many descend from ancient Aramaic speaking peoples, the very language Jesus Himself spoke. They are not newcomers to this land. Their identity, worship, and communities were formed here long before modern borders or governments existed. They have suffered not only from the devastation of war, but also from persecution because of their faith. Churches have been destroyed, entire communities scattered, and families pushed from places that have held their history, language, and devotion to God for countless generations.

We will never arrive unannounced. Every visit begins with relationship, respect, and the blessing of the local tribal community. When we receive an invitation onto a new reservation one of our first steps is to meet with the tribal council, to offer gifts and friendship, introduce ourselves and follow proper protocol. We seek not only their permission to be on their land, but their blessing to enter their community.
