The Power of Love

We met a beautiful Dine’ elder living deep within the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. Her home was like many we’ve visited before, far down a maze of dirt roads, with no running water and no electricity. Meals were cooked on a wood stove, refrigeration was not possible. Every day was about survival. She was raising her 4-year-old granddaughter in these conditions, as many elders do, doing everything she could with so little.

Then we noticed something:
The main power pole was just 100 feet from her front door.

We knew… this was possible.

So we partnered with All Nations North America and through the generosity of our financial partners, we brought power to her home. Lights. Heat. Refrigeration. A new chapter. A new beginning.

In just six months, everything changed. A grandmother and her granddaughter no longer in the dark at night, no longer depending on canned goods that did not require refrigeration, so longer cooking over a wood stove. She was able to bake again and heat up water a lot faster than before for bathing and laundry. What we often take for granted, she received through tears. Such a gift.

And in one of the most humbling moments of all, this precious elder gave Justin and I a handwoven Butow rug as a thank you, a plaque of sorts, honoring not just the gift of power, but the power of love.

This is what compassion does.
