One Step At A Time
She is a beautiful Hopi elder, strong, gracious, and fiercely independent.
But when we met her, she was recovering in a full body brace. She had fallen from her porch, a 4-to-5-foot drop onto the rocky mesa below. The fall fractured vertebrae in her neck and back. It’s a miracle she survived.
When we saw the porch, we understood how it happened. No railings, unevenly spaced steps, wobbly unsecured recycled lumber and plywood hanging on barely by a screw or a nail here and there.
It wasn’t safe for her or anyone really.
So our team got to work.
We rebuilt her entire entryway, a secure, sturdy porch with rails and easy to navigate steps. Simple, yes. But safety can save the precious life of an elder.
This is the power of partnership. Your support turns compassion into action, building safer homes, honoring elders, and protecting lives.
